Captain Ann Campbell is a West Point graduate, the daughter of legendary General "Fighting Joe" Campbell. She is the pride of Fort Hadley until, one morning, her body is found, naked and bound, on the firing range.

Paul Brenner is a member of the Army's elite undercover investigative unit and the man in charge of this politically explosive case. Teamed with rape specialist Cynthia Sunhill, with whom he once had a tempestuous, doomed affair, Brenner is about to learn just how many people were sexually, emotionally, and dangerously involved with the Army's "golden girl". And how the neatly pressed uniforms and honor codes of the military hide a corruption as rank as Ann Campbell's shocking secret life.

I saw the movie version of the book years ago and enjoyed it. Rewatching the movie version again fairly recently inspired me to get a copy of the book. As good as the movie was, the book is much, much better. Mr. DeMille writes a very detailed orientated book. As they say "the devil is in the details." If you enjoy a well written, well researched story I think you will like this book too. It is a very good read and hard to put down. I've read it twice now, and agree that John Travolta was a perfect selection for the part of the DSI agent in the movie. It's a great book.

The General Daughter (Audible Audio Edition) Nelson DeMille Scott Brick Hachette Audio Books Reviews

Intriguing mystery mixed with Army protocol made for a good read. Unnecessary love interest of Warrant Officer Paul Brenner, made a solid page turner drag a bit slow at times for seemingly no real reason in the story.

Rather graphic at times, which seemed at times gratuitous, and while an important part of the plot, again seemed to slow the book down and almost made me want to put it down (almost), and certainly would be a complete turnoff to anybody with more delicate sensibilities.

In the end though, Demille offers up enough suspects to keep you guessing until he is ready to let you hone in on the killer about 3/4 of the way through, and even then, because of the subplots you are never quite sure how it will turn out until the end.

While I note things like "dragging" and "slow" in descriptions above, I should point out this is in contrast to other Demille books I have read recently (Plum Island, The Lion's Game, Wild Fire), it was still an relatively easy read and page turner, and a self confessed "non-reader" still breezed through this in about 7 days of evening time reading. I guess some would describe this as "summertime reading" and if that is what you enjoy (and of course a good mystery) then this certainly fits.
Great storytelling, but DeMilke's fascination with the rogue detective could use a refresh. They're all the same, bucking the system, contemptuous of authority, better at theyjibs than anyone around them, rejecting ambition, and so on. What else ya got?
Nelson DeMille is my father's favorite author, and he suggested I begin with this book. My dad and I have pretty different tastes in books, so I wasn't sure I'd like this novel. I was pleasantly surprised. This novel had me from the beginning. I wasn't sure if I liked Paul Brenner, but he sure intrigued me. The case was interesting. The end, while not completely surprising, was still good enough to make me feel like I had a read a good book when I was finished. In fact, I was sad enough leaving the character of Paul Brenner that I looked up to see if DeMille had written another book starring him. I'm currently reading the sequel to The General's Daughter, Up Country (a phenomenal story btw). The General's Daughter was an easy book to read, but also an easy book to fall into. I couldn't put it down and am really glad I read it.
Great story and a great author from where I once lived; Long Island. My having lived on the island when it was inhabitable my favorites written by DeMlle are Plum Island and The Gold Coast as I know these areas, their history, from younger days growing up along the coast. Both stories are intriguing, great plot and characters though the author lets his brains fall out when it comes to the guns he writes of. Best is DeMilles sarcasm, antagonism, and wit he installs in some of the characters.
This is DeMille at his best. He does have a tendency to waffle with his quality, but certain of his books hit the mark, such as, Mayday, Plum Island, Gold Coast, and The Lions Game. Additionally, the principal character in this story, as well as John Sutter in The Gold Coast, sound like his John Corey character throughout; and if you read enough of his stories, the character traits can become tiresome. This particular book was made into a movie, which I did not see. The book, however, had a very intense story line, but could be found revolting to some who are sensitive to a plot involving unusual sexual practices as a psychological plot foundation. Nonetheless, this murder mystery set on a fictitious US Army post is well done.
Paul Brenner is a Warrant Officer in the Army but more important he's an investigator for the CID - Criminal Investigation Division. He's on undercover duty at Fort Hadley, Georgia working on stopping the sale of weapons by the post supply sergeant. He gets called in to investigate another case though - the high profile murder of the Commanding General's daughter.

Also called in on the case is CID investigator Cynthia Sunhill, a rape specialist and also a woman that Paul had a prior tempestuous relationship with. Both were nearby when the murder occurred.

I had read this book years ago. I am a Nelson DeMille fan and this book is a favorite of mine. I enjoyed it this time around just as much as the first time.

DeMille has a talent for creating intelligent but smart alecky protagonists and Brenner definitely fills that role. He and Sunhill work nonstop to find the killer of this young troubled woman but have great, back-and-forth verbal battles while following up all clues.

DeMille's prior military service definitely shows in this story, making the military day to day functions and jargon very believable.

Twisty, lurid storyline; fun, snarky characters - another winner from DeMille.
